[04:15] <tsoliman> Lightkey: I just noticed the year is supposed to be 1991 .. why an AT and not a 386? I think I had a 386 in 1990 (AST brand)
[04:16] <tsoliman> this is one of those nitpicks like I have with the TV show "Stranger Things" :)
[04:18] <tsoliman> this is the 386 I had: https://www.1000bit.it/lista/a/ast/premium386-33.jpg
[04:18] <snover> perhaps you are confusing history with nostalgia :)
[04:18] <tsoliman> and yeah it was before 1990
[04:19] <tsoliman> snover if you mean about stranger things, the creators are younger than me .. they were not around in 1984 :)
[04:20] <tsoliman> I stand corrected .. they were both 1984 :)
[04:20] <snover> i mean both things :)
[04:20] <tsoliman> yes - it is lovely nostalgia

[04:21] <snover> historical is how it was, nostalgia is how it felt
[04:21] <tsoliman> hmm .. then yes I am confusing them
[04:28] <Lightkey> he mixed historical with nostalgia, that's why he chose his computer model and monitor but added an MT-32 which he never had
[04:31] <Lightkey> and the first computer we had was an used AMD 8088, supposedly from 1990 as well, not everyone can afford the fastest
[04:35] <tsoliman> my firs was the IBM 5155 in 1984 - we upgraded directly to that AST 386 and I got to keep the XT .. (never had an AT / 286)
[04:35] <-- bouncy left irc: Ping timeout: 240 seconds
[04:36] <tsoliman> I remember putting an SB16 into that AST 386 and getting a "RAM parity error" in wolf3d .. that was much later when my father was already on a 486 .. I decided to open it up to "reseat the RAM"
[04:40] <tsoliman> it is very hard to trace back "how did you get so good at computers" .. especially when now all you have to do to learn something is "watch youtube"
[04:41] <tsoliman> the answer I ended up giving my son is "we didn't have an ipad back then .. so the only way to get into a game was to type some DOS commands .. and some point a game didn't work so you had to learn about obscure things like EMS and XMS .. you'd do anything to get to play the game"
[04:41] <-- dreammaster left irc:
[04:42] <tsoliman> the unanswered question (which I still can't remember) is: what were the actual learning resources at the time? like how did I learn about those obscure things

[12:28] <Joefish> hi. I'm currently looking at an 16bit DOS exe that right at the beginning rewrites part of its code and stack segment what prevents static analysis of the executable. I've been wondering if there are ways to adjust the analyser in let's say IDA to make up for that. Like doing a memdump and setting the segments manually at the start of the analyser?

[14:30] <wjp> Joefish: could it be just a compressed .exe?
[14:30] <wjp> (in which case there would be tools such as unp.exe to unpack it)
[14:33] <Joefish> wjp, I tried to unpack it with lzexe and unp but they don't recognize it as compressed. Also the header has the default 'MZ' signature although that doesn't have to mean anything.
[14:35] <Joefish> rabin also has no problem parsing the header and on analysis finds an entry point

[14:35] <wjp> for context: compressed .exes are normal .exes that uncompressed themselves at run-time, so they have a regular header and entry point
[14:36] <wjp> but if those tools don't recognize it, it's likely something else
[14:38] <wjp> one other approach is running it in dosbox until the rewriting is done, and then dumping memory
[14:39] <Joefish> I don't have any experience with compressed executables so I'm not sure what to look out for. I expected it to be an anti-RE measure to prevent static analysis but don't know how common that was back then.
[14:40] <Joefish> Currently I try to set the segment offsets manually in IDA but so far haven't had any luck.
[14:41] <Joefish> yea I do that. I memdumped the running game
[14:42] <Joefish> I also just do that for experience. Just messing around :P
