[05:19] <Deledrius> Joefish, I used to have that manual. Not sure if I still do, though. :(
[05:20] <Deledrius> Is this the right era for you? https://pdos.csail.mit.edu/6.828/2011/readings/hardware/SoundBlaster.pdf
[05:22] <Deledrius> This one looks a lot more down-to-business ;) http://shipbrook.net/jeff/sb.html
[05:24] <Deledrius> A friend's dad printed out the official SB docs for me back in the 90s. Very handy! I probably have the folder around still somewhere.
[05:38] <Joefish> I also found shipbrook and http://www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/images/4/48/AdLib_-_Programming_Guide.pdf that probably already hold enough information for me to work through the code but I was curious what the manual looked like as it was described as cryptic or not easy to understand. Now I can convince myself :P
[05:38] <Joefish> Thanks Deledrius
[05:39] <Deledrius> That SB pdf looks like the one I remember, so it's probably the right one, just a slightly newer version.

[12:36] <troydm> quick question, I see that scummvm supports alot of adventure games that are out of scope of it's initial engine. This is possible via different engines. However I don't see Tex Murphy games support. Is it because of lack of interest by developers or there is another reason?
[12:38] <Strangerke|work> well...

[12:38] <Strangerke|work> We do support one of Access games

[12:40] <Strangerke|work> http://www.mobygames.com/game/amazon-guardians-of-eden
[12:40] <Strangerke|work> this one
[12:40] <Strangerke|work> there's a good start of an engine for, iirc, mean streets
[12:42] <Strangerke|work> the problem is that at some point, a DAT file was added to Amazon. I started shouting, rolling on the floor, then I gave up reversing mean streets just on time to avoid to throw my PC through the window
[12:43] <Strangerke|work> so the main reason this one and Countdown are not supported is: because DAT!!!1!
[12:48] <troydm> so to put simply you couldn't reverse mean streets internal data representation format?
[12:48] <Strangerke|work> no, the DAT file is in Amazon engine
[12:49] <Strangerke|work> the fact it was added made my life impossible, so I can't keep on working decently on Mean Streets and Countdown, so I stopped
[12:49] <Strangerke|work> Mean Streets was playable for several rooms, and now there's the DAT file it's screwed. It's really a pain
[12:49] <troydm> oh well during DOS era this was common thing. Adding data to the engine itself
[12:50] <Strangerke|work> no it's not data in the binary, it's a file we use in stable engines to put hardcoded things
[12:50] <Strangerke|work> when the engine is not mature, imho, it's just a terrible pain in the back
[12:51] <Strangerke|work> someone will eventually pick it where I left it... who knows
[12:51] <troydm> okey I'm a bit confused why would anyone do that
[12:51] <troydm> it's like putting game data inside the engine
[12:52] <troydm> I think it's wrong on many levels
[12:53] <troydm> I'm no game developer myself but I'm long time pro software developer
[12:53] <troydm> and I think same principles of software development apply
[12:54] <troydm> You don't mix your code with your data.
[12:54] <troydm> If you do that, it's wrong
[12:55] <troydm> I think Amazon engine needs to be refactored
[13:21] --> Balas joined #scummvm.
[13:22] <Strangerke|work> not that much, as every hardcoded part is in the DAT file ;)

[13:39] --> ignalina joined #scummvm.
[13:40] <waltervn> we have engines that use DAT files, engines that have data embedded in the code, and engines that load the data from the original executable. For the most part this just depends on the views of the person/people implementing the scummvm engine
[13:49] <waltervn> just to be clear, the original engine mixes code and data, and these are options for how to handle that situation
