[10:36] <m_kiewitz> anyone owns an Asus notebook in here?
[10:36] <m_kiewitz> I'm just looking for a new one
[10:37] <logix> why does it have to be asus?
[10:38] <m_kiewitz> well it doesn't
[10:38] <m_kiewitz> i also found one from Dell
[10:38] <m_kiewitz> is Asus bad?
[10:39] <m_kiewitz> hmm, it seems the one from Asus that I found is Windows 10 only and Windows 7 doesn't seem to work, so that one got striked out
[10:40] <-- ced117 left irc: Ping timeout: 268 seconds
[10:40] <logix> I don't know about asus - I have a dell xps 13 and I'm quite happy with it, but I'm using it with ubuntu, not windows
[10:41] <logix> it just sounded as if you had already ruled out other vendors for your new notebook, that's why I asked
[10:42] <m_kiewitz> well i surely ruled out HP & Sony
[10:43] <m_kiewitz> (im not even sure if Sony still makes notebooks, my current one and the one before that were both Sony. my current one is literally falling apart and the old one still works properly)
[10:43] <logix> you just add a little bit of spyware and it haunts you for the rest of your life...
[10:44] <m_kiewitz> i mean physically falling apart :P
[10:45] <logix> I wouldn't know of any literal falling apart other than the physical one :)
[10:46] <t0by> m_kiewitz: *cough* thinkpad *cough*
[10:46] <logix> yeah, seems sony discontinued the vaio brand some time in the last 2 years or so
[10:46] <m_kiewitz> t0by: lenovo then?
[10:46] <t0by> *thinkpad
[10:46] <m_kiewitz> logix: good riddance, 20 years ago Sony was high quality, now it's just overpriced garbage
[10:46] <t0by> Lenovo consumer laptops are IMHO garbage.
[10:47] <m_kiewitz> yes, that's what i read too
[10:47] <t0by> The thinkpad/thinkstation division they got from IBM still makes reasonable laptops.
[10:47] <m_kiewitz> Thinkpads were great when IBM made them
[10:47] <t0by> I'm typing this on a Lenovo-made T400 and it's every bit as good as the T40.
[10:48] <t0by> Except the hinges, which are prone to wear
[10:48] <logix> m_kiewitz: I wanted to mention the playstation (the original one) - apart from a few PSPs ~10 years ago that was the last sony product I bought
[10:48] <t0by> That's not a terribly bad thing, as you can replace them with $5 parts, a phillips screwdriver and 2 or 3 minutes of your time.
[10:48] <logix> m_kiewitz: then I realized "oh wait, that *was* 20 years ago..."
[10:49] <m_kiewitz> logix: last Sony product that I bought was Playstation 3 in 2009
[10:49] <m_kiewitz> and tons of games are freezing left + right
[10:49] <m_kiewitz> some others work though, so it's not the hardware
[10:49] <logix> wait, I might also have a few sets of sony earplugs that I bought since then
[10:49] <m_kiewitz> playtation 2 was great
[10:51] --> ced117 joined #scummvm.
[10:52] <t0by> m_kiewitz: if I know you enough I would suggest a thinkpad, possibly a refurbished machine, for the excellent input devices, very high user serviceability, docking port and accessories that make it a very 90s laptop (in a good way). As a german you'll probably appreciate being able to swap keyboards by removing three screws.
[10:54] <t0by> Oh, and great Linux support, usually.
[10:54] <m_kiewitz> that's required too
[10:55] <m_kiewitz> such a nightmare, tons of reviews, google returns results of other models :/
[10:56] <t0by> Oh, and power bridge on the latest model.
[10:56] <t0by> *s.
[10:56] <logix> what's that?
[10:56] <t0by> The machine has an internal battery and an external one.
[10:56] <m_kiewitz> is windows 7 64 bit fine in case you only run 32 bit software?
[10:57] <logix> oh, so you can swap battery even without connecting it to power
[10:57] <logix> that sounds useful
[10:57] <t0by> When you run out of battery you can replace it without needing to hybernate, as the internal battery powers the machine for the time.
[10:57] <logix> or hibernation, yeah
[10:57] <t0by> In the olden days we put an extra battery in the Ultrabay to achieve the same effect.
[10:57] <logix> how long does the internal one last?
[10:57] <t0by> (And to achieve 11000+ mah of total juice)
[10:58] <t0by> Ah, you'll have to look it up, I guess it's a 2200mah or something.
[10:59] <t0by> m_kiewitz: tl;dr: T470 is the "regular" laptop, X270 is the ultraportable, T470s is the crippled ultrabook cousing of the T470, L470 is the T470 with cheaper materials, E470 is not a real thinkpad, P70 is the workstation machine.
[10:59] <t0by> (And then there are the X1 and Yoga machine which are regular MacBook Air-style machines, not traditional TPs.)
[11:00] <logix> t0by: huh, http://www.zdnet.com/article/thinkpad-power-bridge-putting-battery-life-in-the-hands-of-customers/ mentions 23.5Wh (3-4h), that sounds rather excessive to me
[11:00] <t0by> Here is a link for the maintenance manual: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/5rq9ub/thinkpad_t470_hardware_maintenance_manual_released/

[17:28] <snover> boy, i seem to keep falling into terrible rabbit holes lately. a crash in lsl6hires because the game sticks objects into the `name` property leads to finding out that restoring save games makes copies instead of referencing the actual objects data, leads to finding out that the syncBaseObject call doesnt actually do anything, leads to discovering that relocation tables arent being read correctly in pre-SCI1.1 games&
