[00:03] <Nomi> @criezy: Yeah, I wanted to work on that tomorrow! But I guess it's just a normal application like any it job? Or is there any example to find online?
[00:04] <Nomi> How are the students divided anyway? Do you have to decide for one or can google if you more then one for your projects? :)
[00:06] <criezy> Nomi: we have information on our wiki with what we expect to seen in an application.
[00:06] <criezy> http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/GSoC_Application
[00:06] <Strangerke> damn, I'm too slow :)
[00:08] <Drenn> ok, just shared my draft proposal for gsoc. By the looks of things I've got a good amount of competition here. :)
[00:08] <Nomi> I knew it would be a dumb question! Sry, working besides atm :D
[00:09] <Strangerke> Deledrius: they can't even ship it with dosbox + win31 :) So yeah, maybe they really put energy in making this compile again
[00:10] <criezy> Nomi: as for your other question, once the application period is finished we can review all the applications we received and decide how many proposals/students we would like to accept. We tell Google, and they come back to us with the number they allocate to us. Then we choose the applications/students we want to keep.
[00:11] <Nomi> is the critic of cyan inc because of legal issues? Oo Or why would he say such a thing :(
[00:11] <Nomi> That sounds fair
[00:12] <Strangerke> Nomi: Most likely they never heard about us and flamed for some reason

[00:12] <criezy> I suspect they indeed just don't know or understand what ScummVM do.
[00:12] <Strangerke> Nomi: There's no legal issue at all
[00:12] <Strangerke> hey dreammaster :) Nice to see you around
[00:13] <dreammaster> Wazzup
[00:13] <Deledrius> Yeah, I'm guessing it's ignorance, which just makes the tone seem unnecessarily petty and dismissive.
[00:14] <Strangerke> Drenn: hum... no, there's no competition so far, you're the only one applying for this GSoC task... ;)
[00:15] <Drenn> well, I figured either there'd be a limited number of mentors or google might not let you accept everyone you want
[00:15] <Strangerke> Deledrius: I could join their facebook page and tell what I think of their "games", but I'm not sure it'd bring something to the discussion :)
[00:15] <Deledrius> hehe, yeah probably not the best counter-argument on that point ;)
[00:16] <Strangerke> Drenn: Usually, we ask for a low number and a high number of slots, and Google works based on that
[00:16] <Deledrius> But it would be amusing if you noted how you don't condone them either!
[00:16] <Strangerke> Deledrius: oh, it wouldn't be to enter an argument, just to tell them I prefer by far plumbers don't wear ties
[00:17] <Deledrius> Ouch
[00:17] <Deledrius> lol
[00:17] <criezy> Drenn: I would suggest you change the access permissions for your proposal draft on Google Doc so that we can add comments to it.
[00:17] <Strangerke> at least PDWT is kind of a game. I'm still not convinced for Myst
[00:17] <Drenn> oh, I'll do that, thanks criezy
[00:17] <Deledrius> Myst is... meh
[00:17] <Deledrius> Riven is excellent though
[00:17] <criezy> Drenn: Recently for us the limitation was more on the number of good applications than the number of available mentors.
[00:18] <Deledrius> Obduction was anticlimactic
[00:18] <criezy> But maybe that will be different this year...
[00:18] <Drenn> I saw you had less people in recent years, I thought that might be due to google letting you take less people. Guess I was mistaken =P
[00:18] <Strangerke> Thinking about it, I had more fun with Pong than with all the Cyan titles
[00:19] <Deledrius> Manhole was fun. And bizarre.
[00:19] <Strangerke> Drenn: no. less proposals, that's all

[01:43] <bgK> Deledrius: regarding the announced Myst re-release, I don't think Cyan needs to do much of an effort. For Myst I, they can use realMyst ME 2 pretty much as is. For Riven, they have the iOS / Android engine. Exile, Revelation, URU and V probably don't need much changes to the original source code to work on modern Windows.
[01:45] <bgK> Riven iOS was recently updated. I don't think it's a hazard.
[02:00] <Zorix> i never actually completed those games, despite having them when they released heh
[02:04] <Deledrius> We've done most of the work for them on the open source Plasma engine to fix Uru and Myst 5 for modern systems. But it's unlikely they'll adopt any of our patches for that, either.

[12:58] <Joefish> urrrghghggh... sometimes you should just listen to what the compiler has to say.. I couldn't store a SeekAudioStream as AudioStream although it is its base class. So I assumed there may be a problem with dynamic_cast becuase scummvm is compiled without RTTI and it does a runtime type check over the vtbl (what I found quite eerie but have seen stranger things before). Then looking closer at makeRawStream, then
[12:58] <Joefish> SeekAudioStream.. hmm in decoders/raw.h it is only forward declared. I haven't included audiostream.h.. now works.. yay? T_T

[15:04] <L0ngcat> https://www.gog.com/news/release_the_curse_of_monkey_island_maniac_mansion
[15:27] <bonki> Nice! Is there actually a point in buying Maniac Mansion seperately, though? The DOTT remaster costs only slightly more and includes the original DOTT and while I have not double-checked I would assume it therefore also includes MM
[15:29] <bonki> separately*
[15:39] <-- f2k left irc: Quit: Leaving
[15:41] <bonki> if it's included that would be DOTT remastered + DOTT + MM for the price of MM + 2 EUR (current sale)

[15:49] <bonki> thinking of it, the separate MM probably includes several versions so it might be worth it

[15:56] <whiterandrek> Guys, hi. Is it allowed to use global engine pointer g_engine or it is a bad approach?
[16:01] <Strangerke|work> I can't say it doesn't happen, but that's something we prefer to avoid before the engine is supported
[16:06] <whiterandrek> Thanks. I needed this for random numbers. Are there any func like rand except Common::RandomSource?
[16:10] --> ignalina joined #scummvm.
[16:10] <bonki> what's wrong with Common::RandomSource?

[16:23] <L0ngcat> bonki: The maniac mansion version on Steam does not include the game executable, and is as such impossible to play without ScummVM. The gog version includes the enhanced edition with executable, and the original without executable in a separate folder. In case anyone was wondering, they are using ScummVM to run both MM and COMI.

[16:37] <bonki> L0ngcat: not sure how that answers my question but valuable information nonetheless, thanks
[16:37] <bonki> btw, MM _is_ included in the DOTT remaster
[16:38] <L0ngcat> But only the enchanced edition
[16:38] <L0ngcat> I can't imagine WHY, but some people might want to buy MM and not DOTT or DOTT Remastered
[16:39] <L0ngcat> I thought your question was if there are more versions included?
[16:39] <bonki> yes, which is why I said that if you want the original as well (if it's included) you will still want to buy MM separately :) so good that you confirmed that
[16:39] <bonki> ah, nope
[16:39] <-- ignalina left irc: Quit: ignalina
[16:40] <L0ngcat> Plus, you get manual, hintbook and reference card for MM
[16:40] <L0ngcat> which is not included in DOTT
[16:40] <bonki> fwiw, the DOTT remaster is actually worth buying as opposed to that Simon crap
[16:40] <bonki> right
[16:40] <L0ngcat> I prefer DOTT original
[16:40] <L0ngcat> I liked the remastered audio in full throttle, but I still prefer the original there as well
[16:41] <L0ngcat> anything from MojoTouch is horrendous crap and gog should be ashamed of putting up with their crap
[16:41] <bonki> agreed
[16:42] <L0ngcat> Thankfully, I already own the legacy editions
[16:42] <bonki> apart from them being crap I also think they are way overpriced
[16:43] <bonki> I bought both Simon I and II for like 6 EUR in a store and that was 20 years ago
[16:43] <bonki> 6 EUR total, that is
[16:44] <bonki> and that was including the usual stuff (shiny box, manual, ...)
[16:46] <bonki> the biggest problem I have with that move is that they will remove the originals from the store, I would care less if they didn't do that. now you will _have_ to buy the mojotouch versions if you want to buy the originals which means supporting mojotouch
[16:51] <bonki> which is OK if you like the new versions but otherwise not so much
[16:53] <bonki> let's just hope they will play fair and publish the sourcecode on their website which they actually do for the mobile apps
